about

This is a series of pieces that were made over the last few years, by experimenting with the 'Krell' patch by Todd Barton, on my modular synthesizer.

The Krell patch is so named because it was an emulation of the music of the Krell people, from the classic sci-fi movie 'Forbidden Planet' - these pieces all use the patch as a starting point, but aim to take the music in a different direction from the usual sci-fi realm.

The three pieces that make up the "Krell Suite" were made by recording multiple takes of a Krell patch, with different settings to emulate different instruments, which were then layered up in Acid Pro.

'Krell's Bells!' is a more recent patch, trying out a different timbre. This is again multiple takes of the patch, layered up in Reaper.

The 'Krell Trio for Synthesized Flute, Trombone, and Tuba" has a krell patch playing the flute, while the other two parts are sequenced using notes and triggers borrowed from the krell patch. This is a single take recording of the modular playing itself, and was quite a complex mess of wires!

'The Dreaded Krell Trombone Solo' is the most recent piece, in which I wanted to use secondary envelopes to alter the timbres and pitches, to give a more natural trombone sound.
